Ipswich Hospital – Power Upgrade

Ipswich Hospital is located in Ipswich Queensland approximately 45 km west of Brisbane City. The hospital is a major acute teaching hospital which has approximately 351 beds and has specialties including anesthetics, emergency, medicine, surgery intensive and coronary care, orthopedics, obstetrics, pediatrics, palliative care, rehabilitation, mental health and allied health services The hospital is part of the West Moreton Hospital and Health Service which provides services for over 250,000 people within the 9,521 kilometer West Moreton region.

Southern Cross Switchboards was fortunate to be involved with the electrical infrastructure upgrade over 2 stages. For the Southern Cross Switchboards, the 2 stages of the project consisted of 1 x 6.8m 3200A Main Switchboard, 2 x 6.4m 2500A Generator Switchboards, and 16 x ATS Cubicles (Various Sizes 250A – 2500A).

The design and controls for the Generator switchboards and ATSs incorporated minimal disruption during changeover of supplies and rectification if there was potentially a failure to occur on the circuit breakers. This was done in conjunction with our clients and the generator controls subcontractors. The ATSs were designed to incorporate a make-before break option with Deep Sea Controllers and plug-in circuit breakers to minimize disruption in the event of circuit breaker failure.

On the project we were also able to display our flexibility in terms of delivery. We were able to stage deliveries to site based on requirements and nature of project. We delivered the 2 large boards on stage 2 via crane truck and we successfully lifted the boards onto the raised switchboard landing next to the substation.

Special thanks to the relevant project teams at Ipswich hospital (West Moreton Health), Ryan Wilks, Eneraque , AGR Electrical and other companies involved on the project including IPD, Schneider Electric, Brassal Engineering & Elemac.

Overall, the job was a great success and we look forward to potentially being involved with stage 3.
